Canned Heat - Canned Heat (1967, us fantastic blues-rock, 2011 Sundazed mono edition LP) 24-bit/192 lossless

Canned Heat rose to fame because their knowledge and love of blues music was both wide and deep. Emerging in 1966, Canned Heat was founded by blues historians and record collectors Alan “Blind Owl” Wilson and Bob “The Bear” Hite. Hite took the name “Canned Heat” from a 1928 recording by Tommy Johnson.

They were joined by Henry “The Sunflower” Vestine, another ardent record collector who was a former member of Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention. Rounding out the band in 1967 were Larry “The Mole” Taylor on bass, an experienced session musician who had played with Jerry Lee Lewis and The Monkees and Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra on drums who had played in two of the biggest Latin American bands, Los Sinners and Los Hooligans.

The original lineup of Canned Heat on their first self-titled album was Bob Hite (vocals), Alan Wilson (slide guitar, harmonica, vocals), Henry Vestine (lead guitar), Larry Taylor (bass) and Frank Cook (drums). Coming from L.A., they stood out from other west-coast American bands in the era who were indulging in folk-rock and psychedelia. Canned Heat played pure no-frills blues music, and it's nowhere more apparent than on their debut album, which consisted of eleven blues covers. Nevertheless they were still popular as part of the hippie counter-culture, having played a well-received set at the Monterey Pop Festival, and then getting jailed in Denver, Colorado for drugs-related charges. They had to sell their publishing rights in order to pay their $10,000 bail.

Reissue on Superfly Records, deluxe edition. Limited to 1000 copies.

"Originally pressed in miniscule quantities on the tiny Ultra/Alwa label in Miami in 1977, Frankie Zhivago Young's The Age Of Flying High remains one of the masterpieces of the Island Soul sound. Recorded over a short few days in 1976, the album combines soul, funk and reggae influences with Bahamian Junakoo and Goombay rhythms, drawing from the rich musical landscapes of North America and the Caribbean."

One of the rarest Bahamas Soul LPs available for the first time in over 30 years!
Nassau-based Frankie ‘Zhivago’ Young was part of the musical scene that created the Island Soul sound– mixing local junkanoo and Goombay rhythms with the US RnB and Soul sounds that filtered over from Miami.
“The age of flying high’ is Frankie Young’s second and rarest LP. Initially coming out on a tiny private label based in Florida with little distribution and forgotten for many years, the few copies that turn up are highly sought and sell for in excess of $500 – if you can find one…
Featuring the mythical track ‘Someone stole your love’ plus lost pearls of sweet soul, reggae and of course hot Island funk, not to mention the involvement of Jamaican musical legend Boris Gardner, the LP is one of the pinnacles of the Island Soul sound.

Superfly Records are proud to present a fully licensed high-qualilty reissue, pressed on 180 gram vinyl with authentic paste-on covers printed in Japan.

I can happily say that the music almost lives up to it, as this is truly one of the best biker rock records ever made.  And this guy has to be one of the best hard rock vocalists ever—if you are looking for a quick way to blast paint off the walls, just crank and endless loop of one of Mr. Stokes’ howls.

There are a couple dumb songs on here but, for the most part, this thing rocks with a solid seedy, cynical vibe to it.  My picks would be “The Devil Just Called My Name”, “Waltz For Jaded Lovers”, “Should Have Married Peggy Sue”, “The Wolfpack Rides The Night”, and “Hot Summer Night In The City”, but the whole LP is pretty solid for this sort of scummy hard rock. (glorifytheturd.com)

CWT - The Hundredweight (1973 uk, great hard progressive/brass rock) Flac

$

CWT was a three piece British band that somehow ended up on Germany’s Kuckuck label, home to such acts as Armaggedon, Ihre Kinder, and Out Of Focus. Adding to the mystery is that this was co-produced by Andrew Loog Oldham. I suspect that CWT was one of the many British bands that were able to support themselves only by playing the club circuit in Germany.

This is some serious ass-kicking early 70’s British rock, with the guitarist and bassist doubling up on keyboards, and some fierce brass parts that were apparently recorded at Motown Studios. Heavy riffing abounds, the singer is gruff and aggressive, the rhythm section is way solid, and the lead guitar playing is awesome.

No credits as to who the players are in the driving brass section, but they have no problem finding the groove and sticking with it. Great use of flute and chimes in a brilliant cover of Love’s ‘Signed D. C. ’Even though the brass parts were apparently recorded separately they definitely don’t seem tacked-on. All in all this is a real good example of heavy-duty early 70’s rock.

Graham Jones - lead guitar / organ
Peter Kirk - bass guitar / piano
Colin White - drums / percussion
Cy Payne - brass arrangements

Highway Robbery - For Love Or Money (1972 us, wonderful hard/heavy psychedelic rock) Flac, vinyl rip 24/192 lossless

After a stint with The Boston Tea Party lead guitarist Michael Stevens began looking for another project. Perhaps inspired by Capitol Records' success with a power trio (e.g. Grand Funk Railroad), Stevens decided to build a hard rock trio. He eventually ended up with a line up consisting of singer/drummer Don Francisco who had previously been a member of the California-based Atlee and Crowfoot and bassist John Livingston Tunison IV had been in an outfit by the name of Manitoba Hugger (?).

Stevens and company attracted the attention of managers Robert Cavallo and Joseph Rufallo who'd turned acts like Little Feat and The Weather Report into big names. The pair signed Highway Robbery to their management roster and quickly approached Bill Halverson about producing the band's debut album. Signed by RCA Victor and teamed with Halverson in the production role, all hyperbole aside, these guys managed to write and record one of the great and overlooked hard rock albums of the 1970s.

At least to my ears 1972's "For Love or Money" is a impressive on a number of fronts. With Stevens credited with writing all eight songs, the LP wasn't particularly original, but the band had good taste when it came to appropriating sounds. In this case their recipe borrowed liberally from bands like early Black Sabbath, Blue Cheer, Free, Led Zep and even a little Grand Funk bombast. Those ingredients were then mixed into something that managed to combine hard rock punch with a commercial sheen that was derivative, but still quite attractive.

With the exception of a pair of radio ready power ballads which were supposedly tacked on the album when RCA executives threatened to shelve the set for lack of commercial potential, this album simply didn't let up. Propelled by Francisco's shrieking voice and Stevens' hyperactive guitar, tracks like 'Mystery Rider', 'Fifteen' and 'Lazy Woman' (the latter one of two songs with Tunison handling lead vocals), were simply killer slices of early-1970s metal that match up well with any of the band's better known competition.

Even more impressive, these songs were tuneful and occasionally even boasted lyrics that rose above the typical 'need-my-woman-now' standard you'd expect from long haired freaks. At some risk to my rock credibility (big laugh), I'll even readily admit that the two commercial numbers 'All I Need (To Have Is You)' and 'Bells' were both actually pretty good.

For love or money, Highway Robbery hereby dedicates itself to roar, to drive, to sensitive joy and, above all, the emission of the highest levels of energy rock. Let it be known that Michael Stevens – lead guitarist, vocalist, writer of all material contained herein, child of a gypsy commune – carries out this pledge in the true manner of his forebears.

Further be it known that he is in allegiance with Don Francisco – drummer, lead singer and a New York native whose main influences have been traditional New Orleans-based bands such as Robert Parker & the Royals and Deacon John & the Ivories; and with John Livingston Tunison IV – bassman, vocalist and painter, whose first sound memories are of Muddy Waters and B.B. King. FOR LOVE OR MONEY: signed, sealed and created by the aforementioned Highway Robbery, in this age, on this day, in the name of storming, beautiful rock and roll.

*Michael "Mike" Stevens - Guitar, Back Vocals
*John Livingston Tunison IV - Bass, Back Vocals
*Don Francisco - Vocals, Drums

The intriguing story of Universe is that the little-known band were driving through Norway and after breaking down were offered assistance by a gent living near-by who happened to have a recording studio in his house. True or not their single album is a great slice of blue-collar rock.

The original 1971 pressing of the only record by this UK progressive band is one of the rarest British prog albums ever! Released in an edition of 200 copies (some without covers) by the tiny Norwegian Experience label, it's almost impossible to locate! The music on offer is great guitar-driven hard rock with some bluesy and progressive elements, similar to early Wishbone Ash, Thin Lizzy, Man and Hackensack. This premiere CD has been expanded with single tracks and two titles from the 1970 acetate.

Mike Blance (vocals, keyboards)
Steve Finn (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano)
John Healan (vocals, bass guitar)
Mike Jones (vocals, guitar, slide guitar)

Turn on the CD ... greets us whine ... wolf ... ? ... and sound the bells ... guitar riff on the canvas of the "shouted" are the words of the song. Sometimes there is a little strange laugh. Macabre atmosphere with a very specific topic, close to work Black Widow. I do not really like this kind of subject matter, but nevertheless it is a fact that at that time a rock band quite often reached to this topic. Next songs are attractive to the typical conventions seek early hard rock.

Admittedly, sometimes the whole is a bit "archaic" ("Gypsy Queen", "Journey") to some of the songs are worth special attention: "It's great the sun", "See the people creeping round "and" Sacrifice ". Plate for a specific audience? Certainly yes, but (in my opinion) far behind "the great forgotten," such as the Andromeda group. The more that connects the two teams a few biographical facts. Menu Links Horse ~ in englishJednym of them was a record deal with RCA, which was known for its publications so. music center.

In addition to Andromeda and Skip Bifferty, Horse was one of the first groups Rock,, promoted by the label. It is worth mentioning that R. Roach guitarist played before the creation of a group called London. London group bass player was Mick Hawksworth, who later became a member of the final composition of the Attack and The Five Day Week Straw People, which later evolved into Andromeda. Roach was briefly hired to concerts to the last, when her guitarist J.DuCann hurt his arm (Sweet Floral Albion -23). However, the early group Horse, by Roach'a, you should look for in 1967-1968. That's when, together with A.Hawkins' em founded the group, which later recorded as Horse discussed on this page LP. It included also, with 15 years Drummer - Steve Holley (in SFA-23 is given the wrong name-Holly), who played earlier in his own group called The Formula.

The fourth member of the Horse was Colin Standring, who plays bass guitar. He previously worked with groups: Kit and the Saracens & Jimmy Brown Sound (also worth mentioning that in both groups of piano playing ... Ken Hensley, who later became a member of The Gods and Uriah Heep). In the composition group, performed by the second half of 1969. After signing with RCA / Victor, during Christmas 1969, Horse proceed to burn. However, the drummer sits a new member of the team - Rick Parnell. The record appears in the spring of 1970 years'

At that time, the group toured a lot. In summer 1970, at a period of 2 months, Ric Parnell is admitted to the group Atomic Rooster, after the departure of her R.Palmera. In late August, Parnell returns to the Horse (in Atomic Rooster P.Hammonda replaced it). Group still performs, but mainly in Germany. In the spring of 1971 (probably in April) re moving away from the group Ric Parnell. In the years 1971-1973 once again becomes a member of Atomic Rooster and later Italian Ibis, Nova and the legendary Spinal Tap. In the 90's there in the hard-rock group Brown Ring.

To know in detail his future career, the current activity (2004) as well as his hobby suggest visit his official website. But let us return to the group Horse. In 1971, Colin Standring, who at that time also studied at Surrey University, it is expelled. Also leaves the group Horse. To 1977 has performed throughout Europe with various teams have met accidentally. In the years 1977-1981 he lived in Munich and from 1982 to today in Zurich. Currently there with a dozen or so Big Band Sound. However, the other two members of the group Horse, R.Roach and A.Hawkins formed a new group called the Saturnalia. (Adamus67)

Post provided by my friend "Ozrock"; thanks mate!

Released on the BJM label, 1972's S/T release by Burnt Suite is a mix of soft country rock, featuring some ballads, and harder rock, with mild psych influences. The lack of personnel, coupled with the spartan production, yields a rather thin sound over most of the LP, and a general garage sound that they may not have exactly been going for, but is very desirable to underground collectors. Grades - 3 B+'s, 1 B, 2 B-'s, and 2 C's. It should be noted that track B3 actually is comprised of 2 parts: the first is really part 1 of track B4, changing over to "Vindati Shanti" about halfway through. Then B4 picks up where part 1 left off in the previous track. Whew! Did you get all that? I'm not really sure what the intent was there, but I'm treating the first half of track B3 as a separate cut. The band were from East Hartford, CT. (tymeshifter)

Originally issued by the private press (Predator Records, PR-1001). The group was established in Wickenburg (Arizona) is without question, one of the rarest American hard psych LPs, rarely appears for sale for over $600.

A loud hardrock/heavy psych group with lots of fuzz guitar and gritty vocals. Local mountain air rocker with psychy west coast flashes on the excellent title track ‘One More Day’ and else where, more melodic numbers rural rock vibe, with a couple of extended jams showing good playing and a nice atmosphere all around.’Crotch Crickets’, has a really catchy heavy riff, other song that really stands out is ‘Crossroader’, which has some really memorable up-tempo, wah-heavy guitar playing is a real rock burner. ‘Mount’ also great instrumental track. The rest of the album is also a high standard bluesy hard psychedelic rock.

This is a standard CD, but in a miniature reproduction of the ORIGINAL LP SLEEVE – SUPERB and collectibles, as all are limited editions of only 200 and are hand numbered.

$

Released by the small Canadian Hippopotamus Records label, the trio's 1976 debut LP "Waiting for the Dawn" was recorded in Quebec with Joey Perno and Enright producing. With Enright credited with penning all ten selections.
Matty Enright was an up-and-coming 18 year old guitar whiz with a 17 year old drummer, Pat Saraceno who had a style that was perfect for the songs Enright was writing. George Gardos (bass) was older (27) and was a musical celeb in Montreal and New York at that time. George had played with one of Montreal's renowned show bands called "Bartholemew Plus Three" which later went on to become "Energy". He's also played with Walter Rossi's band "Charlee". Energy's drummer at the time, Corky Laing, was drafted in 1969 by Felix Papalardi, who was Cream's producer, to form "Mountain". George had jammed with Walter Rossi and Jimi Hendrix when the original Experience were in Montreal on April 2, '68, to play the Paul Sauve Arena. Jimi had stopped by with his colorful entourage at Energy's rehearsal studio on Cote des Neiges Street and George Gardos played the bass for the entire marathon jam session that took place. George had been traveling between gigs in Montreal and NYC for a couple of years before he joined up with Emerald City. The original vinyl records of "Waiting for the Dawn" were pressed sometime in '75 and '76. No formal release date, no record launch and absolutely no promotion was ever done. Most of the original vinyl LP's were distributed at Emerald City's live gigs and that is why they can only be found in the underground record world and with the vinyl record collectors and dealers. Independent record labels also sold thousands of the original vinyl LPs to record distributors in Japan. Emerald City performed live in nine of the ten Provinces of Canada, as well as in a handful of towns in upstate New York.

Three piece hippie band that originly formed in 1970 in Key West, Florida. Progressive psych LP with only two band members remaining, Lenny Perez sadly has passed on. Tunes. Some Dead style guitar jams. "Topaz" has a nice psych middle eastern sound with a long guitar solo, this is a great jam. "Melodic Motion" has an almost Robin Trower sound with phase shifter. "Re Entry" is more progressive with a long drum solo and nice guitar. "Time Delay" is very original with a mellow almost euphoric trippy feel. "Space Jam" and "Nautilus" have that almost spooky edge. 250 press and there are very few around they are becoming quite rare. Reason doesn`t. And all have wrinkles on the labels or at least on one side. Miles Away was recorded at Criteria Studio Miami, Florida 1978.
~zosopat

There were a handful of bands in Key West during the 60's and 70's that would be considered psych and garage. Many of the band's members moved around and formed other bands. Some of the local musicians were in many different bands during this period. Overseas Highway is one of the more prominent bands from Key West. They recorded a couple albums worth of material and released two LP's. This, their main LP is their most sought after release. Jazzy Psych throughout. Very desirable and very rare. About 600 copies made.

Ave Sangria - Ave Sangria (1974 brazilian, splendid psychedelic/folk rock, vinyl rip) Flac / 24bit lossless

The northern Brazilian band AVE SANGRIA began as the TAMARINEIRA VILLAGE around 1968 but were renamed before releasing their only album in the mid-seventies.

The band's music includes a unique blend of acoustic, ethnic instrumentation and percussion, electric and sometimes fuzzed guitar, disjointed rhythms and what can only be characterized as a glam-rock persona consisting of outrageous dress and makeup, exaggerated stage movements and often falsetto vocals.

They used lipstick, kissed on stage, made dirty songs about pirates, dead girls and Satan. Some called them “fags”, some said they were a threat to the pure ladies of the town.

Ave Sangria scandalized Recife city in 1974 in the same way Rolling Stones did in London ten years earlier. In fact, they were known as the “Stones from Northeast” (referring to Brazil’s geography).

Its an incredibly well rounded listen. At times recalling early Tyrannosaurus Rex, and at others sounding not unlike a Brazilian Black Sabbath or something, with some really tough, fuzzed out thug-rock instrumental passages. The vocal delivery moves between an aggressive punky sneer and the aforementioned Bolan/Took chants. It all has the requisite laid-back latin percussion, and some really nice jangly leads as well

Here's another one I haven't been able to learn much about. A five piece (judging by the cover and first name liner note credits), they seem to have been a studio project for producer/writer Wes Farrell. Released by the ABC affiliated Senate label, their self-titled 1967 album featured a decent mix of Farrell-penned originals ("Wha'Cha Gonna Do For Me Now" and "I Wonder") and popular covers (Beatles, Buffalo Springfield, The Bee Gees, whose "To Love Somebody" was mis-credited to Robert Gibb - think they meant Robin Gibb.
To be honest, "The Bubble Gum Machine" isn't going to drastically change your life. The uncreditted male vocalist had a decent enough voice, while their attractive female singer ('Vicki' - no last names shown on the credits) had a voice than bore a passing resemblance to Cass Elliott. Unfortunately, as far as mid-1960s music goes, nothing here is particularly original or inspiring. 'Bout the best you can say is that "The Love of a Woman" has a certain top-40 charm and they would have made a great bar cover band.(Bad Cat)

  *** Reviewed by great fellow Adamus67 ***

Hailing from the northeast corner of Arkansas, Knowbody Else was a groundbreaking musical force during the Summer of Love who were caught up in the post-Sgt Pepper / Byrds-ian day-glow era. What they created at Ardent Studio in 1967 with legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson is nothing short of a truly brilliant psychedelic masterpiece influenced by “the times they are a changin.” LP 'The Knowbody Else' (Hip Records HIS 7003) 1969' Hip Records was a short-lived subsidiary label of Stax (two of their few other releases were Southwest FOB and Paris Pilot).
Original US pressing self-titled LP that was largely ignored at the time, by a young garage psych band playing hippy drifter music which is sometimes strange and some times bluesy. These guys never compromised on this one, securing eternal cult status. And nothing more. During this time the band became interested in psychedelia and Eastern spiritualism which, combined with their Southern Baptist upbringing, contributed to their sound. After several trips to Los Angeles, California , in 1970, the band was signed by Atco Records and rechristened on "Black Oak Arkansas".
A mix of heavy psych and hippie rock, with fluid guitar and some good tracks: 'After I Smoke I Like To Go To Sleep', 'Flying Horse Of Louisiana' and 'No One And The Sun' somehow they were once frighteningly innovative and experimental artists, and properly document their prophetic sense of musical and poetic genius for all to experience.
Thank you so much Adam for that effort
gigic2255

The group, originally called "The Knowbody Else", was formed in 1965 in Black Oak, Arkansas, by Jim "Dandy" Mangrum (vocals), Rickie Reynolds (guitar), Stanley Knight (guitar), Harvey Jett (guitar), Pat Daugherty (bass), and Wayne Evans (drums). Their first PA system was stolen from a local high school. Members of the group were subsequently charged in absentia with grand larceny and sentenced to 26 years at the Tucker Prison Farm (this sentence was later suspended.) This led to their retreat to the hills of rural northeast Arkansas where they lived off the land and refined their musical style. Some of their influences during this time were The Beatles and The Byrds.

Before they sweeped the nation throughout the 70's, Black Oak Arkansas already recorded an album in 1969 as The Knowbody Else. Released on the Stax Label (famous for being a soul music label par excellence), this is a nice little hippie album. Similar in gesture to Hour Glass.

The Knowbody Else moved to Memphis, Tennessee in 1969 and signed a record deal with Stax Records. Their self-titled debut album, and their only album with Stax, was largely ignored by the populace. During this time the band became interested in psychedelia and Eastern spiritualism which, combined with their Southern Baptist upbringing, contributed to their sound.

This is the first CD reissue for Hardwater’s highly-rated psychedelic rock album, produced by the legendary David Axelrod (Electric Prunes et al). The LA-based band recorded their sole album for Capitol back in 1968. Hardwater had evolved out of Denver Colorado's premier surf band the Astronauts.

Combining elements of psychedelia and ountry rock, they explore the same dusty roads as The Byrds and the Buffalo Springfield. Alongside their original compositions, they seamlessly fitted in interpretations of three tracks written by John Carter and Tim Gilbert of fellow Denver band the Rainy Daze.

Bass – Robert Carl McLerran
Drums – Tony Murillo
Guitar – Peter M. Wyant*
Guitar, Vocals – Richard Otis Fifield*
Photography By [Cover & Liner] – Dick Brown (3)

Remastered By – Nick Watson
Written By – Carter-Gilbert (tracks: 2, 7, 8), R. Fifield-R. McLerran (tracks: 1, 3 to 6, 9, 10)

Pompous and predictable psych/prog. Not recommended.
later: I was a bit harsh when I judged this album. The final part is more relaxed and quite enjoyable.

Good Mexican garage, featuring Voxx organ, guitar, and gruff Spanish vocals. Grades - 1 A-, 2 B+'s, 5 B's, and 3 C+'s. This issue came in a numbered pressing of 500 copies - I'm not sure if it's a boot or not.

Not as good as Los Ovnis, this Mexican band sounds more commercial to my ears and apart good organ, has nothing special to offer. But why not from time to time? I often wonder if they sing in English or in Spanish. KALEIDOSCOPE, the SPIDERS and numerous others are miles better.

Thump Theater / Crank - A Night In The Cave (1971 us, awesome hard/heavy & progressive rock) vinyl rip, Flac 24bit lossless

Heavy-rock with progressive touch, split lp unearthed by the rockadelic label featuring ultra-rare underground 70s hard rock sounds (c. 1971) with one side by each band.

These tapes came from the Cavern Sound Studios (Stoned Circus, Bulbous Creation, Phantasia, Trizo 50); the Crank tape had ‘Zep Jr.’ written on the box, which is pretty accurate frame of reference. As for Crank's music, it's consistently heavy, tightly played energetic hard blusey rock, packed with sharp riffs. Owing a debt to Led Zep no doubt, but with it's own brand of aggression it stands on it's own merit as the sound of a young and extremely talented band that could have gone on greater success. The final track regresses slightly in to standard blues-rock, but this is eminently forgivable, acknowledging the influences this music emerged from.

Thump Theater offers a more progressive rock sound with some good guitar breaks and catchy lyrics. Last copies from a long gone edition from 1997 of around 750 copies.

- One of three tracks co-written by Barbella, 'Yesterday's Children' had that Fudge-styled heaviness that you either love, or hate with a passion.  Propelled by Jason's rugged voice, this one was clearly intended to underscore the band's reputation as a 'serious' outfit, but today the results come off as over-the-top and outright pompous.  The brief highlight came in the form of  Dennis Jason's short, stabbing fuzz guitar solo.  Should have let him have a little more spotlight time ...    rating: ** stars

- 'Can't Stop Feeling Lonely' was a pretty ballad, that would have been even better had Jason been able to handle the vocal with a bit more subtlty.  As it was, this one could have been mistaken for a David Clayton-Thomas solo effort (not a good thing).    rating: ** stars

- Be interesting to know it Curtis Mayfield ever heard this cover of his song ...   I suspect he wouldn't have been all that thrilled with this overwrought, gut wrenching version.  I sure wasn't.     rating: ** stars

- I remember listening the mid-tempo 'Time and Time Again; three times in a row and being unable to remember anything about it other than the female backing singers ...    rating: * star

- So remember this album was recorded during the height of Vietnam so I'm guessing this was intended as the band's comment on the conflict.  Built on the traditional hymn, complete with martial drums, this one added stabbing organ, war sound effects, a spoken word segment, and kind of a jazzy mid-section to make it mildly entertaining.  Imagine Vanilla Fudge doing an anti-war song and you'll have a feel for this one.   rating: ** stars

- Hum, all hyperbole aside, side two's extended cover of The Beatles 'Eleanor Rigby' may stand as one of the worst Fab Four covers I've ever stumbled across.  Is it possible to record something that's uber-heavy?  Well, if so, these guys managed to do it, turning what was originally a slightly pompous slice of social commentary into a mind-numbing slice of social commentary.  Yeah, this one managed to make Vanilla Fudge sound like a bubblegum pop outfit ...   rating: ** stars

- Not that it was a great pop song by any stretch of the imagination, but after some of the earlier efforts 'Come with Me (To My World)' at least showed a semblance of a lighter, more radio friendly sound.  rating: *** stars

- As a huge Otis Redding fan I've always thought his version of 'Loving You Too Long' was a bit on the over-the-top side.  The seemingly endless Goliath version made me revisit that contention.  Once again, with this arrangement these guys managed to turn a classic soul song into a funeral dirge.   Please make him stop woman ...  rating: ** stars

- Wow, the soul-tinged  'Are You Lonely For Me Baby?' had some of the worst backing vocals I've ever heard.  On a positive note Dennis Jason's brief fuzz guitar solo was nice.  Wonder why he wasn't given more time in the spotlight ...    rating: ** stars

- The line group original, 'Jacksonville Express' was little more than a minute's worth of train sound effects.  Hardly a song ...   rating: * star

Well, the bright psychedelic cover was kind of cool ...

The Bob Seger System - Mongrel (1970 us, fantastic hard, rhythm.and.blues rock - 2010 digipack edition) Flac

Most artists that deliver a second record as shaky as Noah fold on their third album. Not Bob Seger. He reasserted control of the System, consigning Tom Neme to a fanboy's footnote, and returning the group to the piledriving rock that was his trademark. All of this was evident with his third album, the superb Mongrel. Never before, and never since, has Seger rocked as recklessly and viciously as he did here -- after a spell in the wilderness, he's found his voice.

He's so assured, he elevates his Ramblin' Gamblin' Man characters Lucy Blue and Chicago Green to mythic status in the pulverizing "Lucifer," perhaps the greatest song on this lean, muscular record. That assurance carries over not just through the ferocious rockers that dominate the album -- "Evil Edna,""Highway Child,""Leanin on My Dream," and "Song to Rufus" all hit harder than latter-day MC5 -- but to quieter moments like "Big River," where he first hits upon the wistful, passionate ballad style later popularized with "Night Moves." The fact that the System connects on both illustrates that Seger is not just fronting an excellent band, but that he's developing into a first-class songwriter. Put it this way -- the only time the System sounds ill at ease is when they tackle "River Deep - Mountain High," and that's not because they're ill-suited to the epic -- it's because they find the lie in the song's artificial pretensions and deliver a performance that eclipses the song itself.

That two-fisted punch of terrific performances and songs is unexpected, especially after an album as conflicted as Noah, but the truly remarkable thing is that Mongrel showcases a band so powerful and a songwriter so distinctive, that it still sounds white-hot decades after its release. (Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic)
